About

From engine room to sustainability desk

Marine engineering at sea, fleet operations ashore — now focused on safety, decarbonization and data.

I went to sea as a marine engineer in 2013 and sailed on LNG carriers and FSRUs with Exmar Shipmanagement and Excelerate Technical Management. My Marine Engineer employment period is recorded through September 2023, including a project assignment ashore in 2017–2018. The work was hands-on: propulsion systems, steam turbines, generators, boilers, compressors, pumps and rotating machinery, engine-room and control-room operations, cargo operations and bunkering, preventive and condition-based maintenance, technical reporting — all within multicultural shipboard teams.

Ashore, the path led through fleet operations into HSEQ and sustainability: Consultant on the Belgian maritime innovation ecosystem with Maritime Campus Antwerp (2023), Fleet Controller with Eurostar in Brussels (2024), and now Safety & Sustainability Superintendent with AML / Stena Line in Tangier. Today my focus is safety, sustainability, climate change and environmental compliance — ESG, decarbonization, energy efficiency and fleet performance — with a growing interest in maritime digitalization and AI-supported, data-driven decision making.

Two master's degrees support the move — Marine Engineering (2022) and Maritime and Air Transport Management at Antwerp Management School / University of Antwerp (2023), both with Great Distinction. I am motivated by practical improvement: safer ships, cleaner fleets, and numbers that help crews and shore teams make better decisions. Always glad to exchange ideas with people across the industry.

    Professional timeline

Sea-going engineering first, shore-based impact now. Scope follows the resume — no quantified claims beyond it.

    1. 2024 – Present

      Safety and Sustainability Superintendent

AML / Stena Line — Tangier

      • Support implementation and continuous improvement of Safety Management Systems (ISM, ISPS, MLC) through audits, inspections and drills, in coordination with the Designated Person Ashore (DPA).
      • Manage environmental compliance: SEEMP implementation, CII performance monitoring and corrective action planning to maintain or improve vessel efficiency ratings.
      • Oversee emissions monitoring and regulatory reporting under IMO DCS, EU MRV, EU ETS and FuelEU Maritime.
      • Authorised representative in the EU Union Registry — manage the company holding account under Spain's RENADE, covering EU ETS compliance, EUA transactions and annual allowance surrendering.
      • Member of the Energy Efficiency Project Steering Team: fleet decarbonization and operational performance work with onboard crews and technical, commercial and financial teams — CII improvement, SEEMP fuel-consumption reduction, operational efficiency, hull and propeller condition, anti-fouling considerations, resistance reduction, energy-saving measures and alternative/green fuels.
      • Coordinate inspections and verifications with flag states, classification societies, port state control and independent verifiers; represent the company during external audits.
      • Deliver safety leadership and environmental compliance training to seafarers and shore staff; prepare HSEQ reports and support fleet decarbonization initiatives.
    2. Mar 2024 – Sep 2024

      Fleet Controller

      Eurostar — Brussels

      • Coordinated daily fleet allocation and maintenance planning to ensure trainset availability and operational coverage for the commercial transport plan (D to D+7).
      • Monitored fleet performance and out-of-service units, keeping continuous coordination with maintenance centres to optimise fleet balance and return assets to service on time.
      • Implemented and adapted planned maintenance programmes, supported daily assignment planning and prepared operational derogations balancing transport performance with safety compliance.
    3. Feb 2023 – Jun 2023

      Consultant

      Maritime Campus Antwerp — Antwerp

      • Analysed collaboration dynamics among key stakeholders in Belgium's maritime innovation ecosystem — ports, shipping companies, research institutions and government bodies — using combined quantitative and qualitative research.
      • Identified structural pitfalls, weaknesses and pain points affecting stakeholder collaboration and innovation performance.
      • Ran stakeholder interviews and survey-based data collection and translated findings into practical recommendations to strengthen ecosystem-wide innovation outcomes.
    4. Oct 2017 – Mar 2018

      LNG Project Assistant

      Exmar Shipmanagement — Antwerp

      • Supported the Project Manager and Technical Superintendent on the conversion of an LNG carrier into a stationary unit for ship-to-ship LNG cargo transfer between shuttle carriers and receiving vessels.
      • Contributed to retrofitting of the propulsion system, main engine and safety systems, including winterization measures for year-round stationary operation in an extreme cold-climate location.
      • Reviewed system and machinery manuals to support engineering assessments and alignment with applicable regulations.
      • Tracked drydock / punch-list items and coordinated between shipyard, Master, Chief Engineer, suppliers, vendors and manufacturers to keep the conversion on schedule.
    5. 2013 – 2023

      Marine Engineer

Excelerate Technical Management / Exmar Shipmanagement — LNG / FSRU

      • Operated and maintained propulsion and auxiliary machinery on large marine plants: steam turbines, generators, boilers, pumps, compressors, purifiers, motors, fans, valves, heat exchangers and associated piping and utility systems.
      • Planned and executed preventive, planned, condition-based and corrective maintenance through computerised Planned Maintenance Systems — inspections, troubleshooting, overhauls, component replacement, testing and return to service.
      • Stood control-room and engine-room watches: process monitoring, alarm response, setpoint adjustment and stable plant operation within safety and performance limits.
      • Handled bunkering and waste streams under international rules; applied permit-to-work, lock-out/tag-out, risk assessment and toolbox-talk discipline; prepared technical reports and maintenance records.
      • Managed the full spare-parts cycle — demand forecasting, stock optimisation, supplier sourcing, price negotiation, purchase orders and goods receipt — with OEM and vendor coordination.

    Climate change & ESG

A maritime route into climate work

Not activism in general — the ship-specific side of the energy transition, where an engine-room background is an advantage.

Climate regulation is now daily fleet work: EU ETS allowance surrendering, FuelEU GHG-intensity accounting, MRV/DCS reporting, CII ratings and SEEMP actions. I handle these from inside a shipping company, which keeps the perspective operational — what a crew can actually do, what a retrofit really saves, what a verifier will actually accept.

ESG and GHG accounting extend the same logic ashore: turning fuel and voyage data into credible sustainability reporting. My GitHub learning — ML carbon tracking, coastal monitoring, energy-system notebooks — supports that direction without pretending to be client work.
